Faience is the general English language term for fine tin-glazed pottery. The invention of a white pottery glaze suitable for painted decoration, by the addition of an oxide of tin to the slip of a lead glaze, was a major advance in the history of pottery. 
Sarreguemines DV was established in 1790. Nicolas-Henri Jacobi and two partners set up the first factory, and over the next two centuries the lively and colourful faience of Sarreguemines attracted admirers from around the world. 
Napoleon I became a major customer, and the factory supplied most of the original tiles used to decorate the walls of the Paris metro during its construction.
The factory closed in 2007.
This beautiful little cup was gifted to me by my step-mum. The hole in the bottom had been added some time in the past, presumably so it could be used as a pot plant holder.
The backstamp shows that this cup was manufactured between 1920 and 1950.
